Friday Top 5:  Underappreciated Madden Players

By Will "raczilla" Kinsler

One thing that's interesting to look at when going through the Madden NFL 09 highlights on EA SPORTS World is which players are most often featured.  It's not a surprise to see a high volume of videos with players such as Terrell Owens or Adrian Peterson.  After all, those guys are stars.  But then there are some players who even despite having pretty significant performances in the NFL this season, are not often seen in at the top EA SPORTS World highlights.  I give you my top 5 underappreciated Madden players.

#5  Kerry Collins:  I realize that Kerry Collins isn't exactly setting the league on fire, but he's the quarterback on the only undefeated team in the NFL.  Yet when I go through the highlights each week, he's rarely seen.  Vince Young has proven to be a very good quarterback that can lead a team to the playoffs, but let's show Kerry some love too.  Something tells me the speed ratings might be a factor here.

#4  Steve Slaton: Steve Slaton plays for the Texans and I suppose they aren't the most popular Madden team.  Still, Slaton has made some big plays and has 8 runs over 20 yards this season.  He's pretty elusive and can do quite a bit of damage in your Madden backfield.  I don't care if you have to trade for him in franchise, let's see some highlights from this talented young running back.

#3  Brandon Marshall:  Brandon Marshall will probably catch 100 passes for the second year in a row.  He's already got 10 TD receptions compared to a solid 7 from last year.  His team hasn't been completely consistent but will likely win their division and go to the playoffs.  But where are the Marshall highlights?  He's a guy I'd like to see a lot more clips of.

#2  Ricky Williams/Ronnie Brown:  I do recall seeing a couple of Dolphins highlights in early Madden Top 10s, but they haven't been dominating EA SPORTS World highlights like they could.  The Dolphins are a winning team and these two running backs have over 1,000 combined yards with plenty of football left.  Let's see them frustrating defenses on the Madden gridiron a little more often.

#1  Michael Turner:  Michael Turner is having one heck of a year.  He's third in the league in rushing and has 10 TDs.  Yet Turner and the Falcons in general (Matt Ryan, Roddy White, anyone?) aren't all over the Top 10 Videos like they could be.  Every week I see highlights of the Atlanta Falcons on my TV, but they aren't nearly as popular when it comes to videos submitted for consideration in the Top 10.  Falcons fans have to represent and make that change.

These are just a few of the players I think are underrepresented in the Madden NFL 09 highlight clips I've seen.  Who do you think we should be seeing more of each week in the Top 10?

I don't think the OVRs of teams are too big of a deal. In fact, I'm not sure whether or not these are ever even adjusted. It's the player ratings that matter most. That's why the Raiders were such a popular Madden team when they still had Randy Moss. There has been a pretty good history of teams that play better in Madden than their OVR rating. Guys like Turner/Ryan mentioned above have in fact seen ratings boosts this year, so the person who mentioned that below is incorrect.

Also worth mentioning is this discussion is that it's not just online players who submit highlights. There are a ton of highlights from franchises and even some where star players are moved to other teams.

If you look at the list above and search for highlights of those players, there are a decent amount for all of them. They just aren't being submitted in the weekly highlights posts. There are pretty clear trends in those weekly threads. This top 5 just calls some of those out.

You talk of all these mediocre teams. How about you guys give THEM some love by boosting their stats to where they should be! Damn, really aggravates me! I dont understand how you all are complaining about not seeing any Madden highlight clips from Ricky Williams or Mike Turner. Ricky Williams hasn't received a ratings boost since Madden dropped, neither has Turner. Falcons have proven themselves a worthy team, a WINNING team, yet still rated at 67. This is garbage. No excuse for that. Especially since most online players take either overrated teams such as Dallas, Chargers, Colts, and the Patriots. You tell me how your going to make highlight videos against teams like that? Do your employees at EA just don't watch games? Seems like one of you gets bored one night to watch all of two minutes of ESPN highlights and turn off your tv. I've been a fan of the Madden franchise for roughly 14 years. Thats 14 years of my funding, going to your organization. I think it is your responsibility, not privilege, to make NFL games. Although you bought the NFL liscense, I don't believe this is a reason to sit back and do this to your fans. Especially since it's the same gaming structure, with minor gameplay ajustments every year. I mean, there are still players running like they have sticks shoved in their *****. EA should not only be working to adjust the ratings, they should really get them correct. You all should also really look at bringing true motion into your games. As in, bring in the top 15-20 guys from every team, and capture their running styles, and movements. Adrian Peterson has blazing speed, and could get in and out of cuts like no one I've seen... Why is he such a washed up back in Madden? I hope you all notice that is NOT how he runs... How do you think your fans will feel when they would ACTUALLY be able to juke and break 6-7 guys on defense with AP? Or ACTUALLY pull of a Randy Moss catch with 3 defenders on him. Think about it.

Matt Cassel!!!!!!!! He had 2 400+ yards passing games 2 weeks in a row. I know this is about highlights, but EA needs to show some love in the ratings department. Pretty please.

Hey there. I think the reason why you never see any falcons highlights is that, they are so far underrated. They are definately not a 67 team anymore. I think there needs to be an update for TEAM OVR RATINGS. Bengals definately shouldnt be an 80 anymore, and the falcons definately should be at least an 80... I say there needs to be more love to a team like the falcons...
