It's hard to know exactly who I'm supposed to put the blame on for this week's 40-28 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. Should I blame Jason Campbell for throwing a pick 6 while we were in field goal range early in the 4th and could have tied the game? Should I blame Ladell Betts for putting the ball on the ground in a similar circumstance on the very next drive? Maybe I should blame the defense for giving up a long rushing touchdown when I needed to get the ball back after a miraculous Santana Moss touchdown with under two minutes to go.
No matter who takes the blame, we lost this one and it should have gone the other way. It was yet another game where the defense couldn't hold our opponents. It was yet another game where Jason Campbell threw the ball for over 300 yards and it wasn't enough. Once again he threw the ball 40 times (44 if we're being accurate.) There were things that were different this time too. Jason Campbell also threw two costly interceptions. For once we were able to run the football. Ladell Betts had an impressive 156 yards on 25 carries, picking up two touchdowns along the way.
Rather than break down my team's mistakes as I have week by week, I think this one is pretty simple. This game turned on a handful of plays. We could have just as easily won by 12 as lost by 12. It could be the Cards coach on the hot seat and not me. But my team isn't where it needs to be yet and until we can start making the plays that matter, when they matter, we're going to continue down the road of defeat.
I've now got a 12 point approval rating and the 2-1 Dallas Cowboys are my next opponent. Rookie DE Phillip Merling hurt his hand and is now out 2-3 weeks. his back up Phillip Daniels has a high ankle sprain and is out 4-5 weeks. Marcus Washington is out at least a week with a broken finger. Could things possibly get any worse for this Washington Redskins squad?
This is the definition of having your back against the wall. If I can beat the hated Dallas Cowboys one the road this week, it might be enough to resurrect my young career. If not, who knows? I think I'm up to the challenge, and I'm having a lot of fun doing it. Now it's time to shock the world with a victory in Dallas!
