star star star star star
With the Olympic's starting in a week's time I have decided to take an interest in the football on offer before the Premiership starts. Of course the Premier League will be missing a few of its stars with Mascherano (Liverpool) for Argentina, Babel (Liverpool) and Zuiverloon (West Brom) for Holland, Anderson (Man United), Jo (Man City) and Lucas (Liverpool) for Brazil. Anichebe (Everton) forĀ (N)igeria, Song (Arsenal) for Cameroon all taking part in the games so there will be some quality on show. The biggest star of course will be Ronaldinho who may be at his very creative best having left Barcelona to go to AC Milan. That new freedom on the world?s biggest stage may help re-spark the genius that has been missing for a few years or we can hope at least. One little player who always shines is Messi and after Fifa ruled that all clubs must release players under 23 for the Olympics there must be a staring role for him to especially given that Argentina could meet Brazil in the semi-finals.
With so many under young players playing (each squad is only allowed three players over 23 years of age) it is in effect an `Under-23 World Cup?. I am really interested in who will make an impression on this competition especially as Newcastle?s new policy is to buy young (or not at all).
As for who will win I think it has to be either Argentina, Holland, Brazil or Italy. I would like to see Holland do well especially after how well they played in Euro 08 but I guess with conditions Argentina or Brazil will be more likely to pick up the gold.

For any one who is interested here is the group game details and the format for the finals:

Group A - Ivory Coast, Argentina, Australia, Serbia
Group B - Holland, (N)igeria, Japan, USA
Group C - China, New Zealand, Brazil, Belgium
Group D - Republic of Korea, Cameroon, Honduras, Italy

QF #1 - Winner Group C v Runner-up Group D
QF #2 - Winner Group D v Runner-up Group C
QF #3 - Winner Group A v Runner-up Group B
QF #4 - Winner Group B v Runner-up Group A

SF #1 - QF 1 Winner v QF 3 Winner
SF #2 - QF 2 Winner v QF 4 Winner

Final - SF #1 Winner v SF #2 Winner

The BBC has just posted this news story about a GB Olympic team it explains it a bit better than I do:

Thanks for the info. I'm kinda intrigued too. I think we can see all the games in the U.S. as well.
